Colin Whitney

Project Engineer

Colin Whitney is a Project Engineer at Modern Building with a lifelong passion for construction—whether he realized it or not. Growing up, he spent much of his childhood helping his father with bathroom remodels, decks, and various projects around the house, unknowingly laying the foundation for his future career. By 16, he was working on a foundation and excavation crew in the Oakland and Berkeley Hills, where his fascination with what he calls “Big Boy Legos” truly took hold.

Although Colin earned a bachelor’s degree in Finance, he found himself drawn back to construction after college, starting as a Financial Analyst at a large construction company. It didn’t take long for him to shift toward the field, where his interest and drive led him to become a Project Manager by age 25, overseeing more than $50 million in public works projects.

After spending 27 years in the Bay Area, Colin followed his pull toward the outdoors and relocated to Grass Valley. There, he purchased a property that keeps him busy on weekends and made the transition to a Superintendent role, combining his professional expertise with his hands-on passion. Whether on the jobsite or at home, Colin genuinely enjoys building and improving the spaces around him.

Outside of work, you’ll find Colin working on projects for friends, snowboarding, dirt biking, or relaxing around the fire pit with good company.
